FAQs

FAQs

Advantage Plus Checking

What steps should I take to prevent check forgery?

We suggest the following steps:

  1. Always use permanent ink when writing checks rather than pencils or erasable ink pens.
  2. Make out a check to a name, not “cash” so someone else can’t cash that check.
  3. Draw a line after the name of the party who’s supposed to get the money.
  4. Print numbers as close as possible to the preprinted dollar sign.
Can I give another user access to my account?

Yes. By setting up a cross-account agreement, you can transfer money, view balances, check transaction history and request transfers from linked accounts – all from one online banking login. The user with access to your account can even make deposits using mobile check deposit on the Arsenal app. To set up account access for another user, the account owner of both the sending account and the recipient account must sign a form for the cross-account relationship to be established. To learn more, contact us or start a live chat.

How do I deposit money into my account?

Deposits can be made via direct deposit, an ATM, branch or shared branch. You can also transfer money into your checking account using online or mobile banking. If depositing a check, you can use the mobile check deposit feature on the Arsenal app.

How do I reorder checks?

You can reorder checks online, or call 1.800.275.1053.

When you order checks through us and our checking partner, Harland Clarke, they are packed with features that add security – and value – for you. The newest feature added (2018) to our checks is CheckArmor®, a fully managed identity theft restoration service. Harland Clarke checks also include enhanced mobile security features that support remote deposit capture and make it more difficult for checks to be used fraudulently.

How do I view my account activity?

You can log into online or mobile banking to see your real-time transaction history. We also send detailed account statements monthly: you can choose between free eStatements or $2 paper statements by mail (fee waived for members 17 and under, or 65 and older).

How many checks can I write per month?

As many as you want. Arsenal accounts feature unlimited check-writing privileges.

How old do I need to be to open a checking account?

Members must be age 18 and older and receive ChexSystems® approval. However, members age 13-17 may open an account with a parent or guardian as a signer.

ChexSystems is a check verification service and consumer credit reporting agency. About 80 percent of all U.S. banks and credit unions use ChexSystems to screen applicants by checking your banking history. A ChexSystems report examines data submitted by financial institutions in the past five years. A report may describe banking irregularities such as check overdrafts, unsettled balances, depositing fraudulent checks, or suspicious account handling. Financial institutions may refuse to open a new deposit account for a consumer who has a negative item reported.

What happens if I spend money that’s not in my account?

If your account becomes negative, we will draw money from your savings account first. If there are no available funds in your savings account and you have not established an overdraft line of credit with us, we may still honor the check, but you will be charged a $28 fee, which is several dollars less than the average amount charged by banks. Courtesy Pay is available based on member eligibility; Arsenal may pay overdrafts up to a total of $750 (including fees). If we do not honor your check due to non-sufficient funds in your checking account, you will be charged a $28 fee.

What is Arsenal’s routing number?

Our routing number is 281081233.

Auto Loans

Where can I get a free copy of my credit report?

The only place to get a truly free credit report is AnnualCreditReport.com. You can receive one from each credit-reporting bureau – TransUnion, Equifax and Experian – every year. It’s best to stagger your three reports throughout the year. For example, get your TransUnion report in January, Equifax in May and Experian in September.

If I’m given the option of low-interest financing or a manufacturer’s rebate at the dealership, which should I take?

A rebate will reduce your auto loan balance, while low interest financing lowers your monthly payment. The best option depends on the price of the vehicle, the size of the rebate and the interest rates available for financing. Use this calculator to help you determine which is better or give us a call.

Business Checking

Business II Checking has a minimum average daily balance requirement to avoid paying late fees. What’s the difference between that and just a “minimum balance requirement”?

We’re glad you asked. Many banks charge fees based on a minimum daily balance. If your account drops below the minimum on any given day, you’ll be charged.

We go with a more generous option and charge fees based on a minimum average daily balance instead. That means we’ll calculate your average balance at the end of each month, and only charge a fee if your account is consistently lower than the required amount. This can be a big help if you find that your checking account dips a little low at the end of the month, but generally stays at a higher balance.

Our routing number is 281081233.

What is Courtesy Pay?

Courtesy Pay is automatically activated on all checking accounts in good standing. This service allows us to pay, at our sole discretion, an item (check) presented for payment against your checking account when the requested payment causes the account to become overdrawn. If for any reason you would like to opt out of this service, you may do so by contacting us directly.

How do I deposit money into my Business Checking account?

Deposits can be made via an ATM, branch or shared branch. You can also transfer money into your checking account using online or mobile banking. If depositing a check, you can use the mobile check deposit feature on the Arsenal app.

How do I view my Business Checking activity?

You can log into online or mobile banking to see your real-time transaction history and view your monthly eStatements (unless you’ve opted to receive printed statements in the mail).

CardKey

Can I put more than one credit card or debit card in the app?

Yes! You can place all of your Arsenal Credit Union debit and credit cards into the application. Any Arsenal Credit Union card with a Visa logo can be added to the app.

How do I add a credit or debit card to the app?

When you login for the first time, use the “Enroll” feature to add your initial card. For additional cards, launch the app and scroll to the right until you see the “Add a Card” link.

What do I need to enroll in CardKey

You need to have the card number for the card you want to manage and your contact information.

Do I have to be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi in order for the app to work?

You’ll need to be connected to the internet to use the app. We recommend always using a secure Wi-Fi connection or your mobile data plan. Using a public Wi-Fi connection puts your information at risk of theft.

What operating systems does CardKey support?

The latest version of iOS and Android are supported, plus two previous versions.

Who do I call for help with CardKey?

If you need assistance and you are on the login page, tap on “Contact” at the bottom right to pull up a number you can call. If you are already logged into your account, tap on the hamburger menu in the upper left, and then tap on “Contact” at the bottom of the menu that appears.

What can I do with Arsenal CardKey?
  • Manage your debit or credit card
  • Set up alerts and controls
  • Turn cards on/off
  • Notify us when you’re travelling
  • Report cards as stolen
  • Filter card transactions
  • Pay your credit card bill
  • Check your CU Rewards balance
I’m trying to report my card as lost or stolen and I’m getting a message “It looks like you are trying to update your address.” Why can’t I complete my lost/stolen report in this app?

You are getting this message because you reported that the address we have on file is not correct. We do not want to process the report and then send your replacement card to the wrong address, so we need to update your address first. Please call us at 314.962.6363, Option 6, for assistance.

If I’ve enabled alerts, how will I receive my notifications?

Alerts, when enabled, will be sent as SMS text messages to the phone number that is in on your profile. If you enable alerts, please make sure a valid phone number that can receive text messages has been added to your profile. You may receive your alerts at the email address that is on your profile if the service that delivers text messages is temporarily unavailable.

How quickly are the alerts, controls and lock/unlock features activated?

Within moments after you hit “submit,” the locks, controls and alerts are activated.

CDs

How is interest calculated?

Interest is calculated on the average daily balance of the certificate over the interest period. Interest compounds quarterly.

How much money do I need to open a CD?

The minimum amount to open a CD at Arsenal is $500.

Is there any risk involved with a CD?

A certificate of deposit is a safe investment that is federally insured by NCUA to at least $250,000. It provides a guaranteed rate of interest for a specific period of time.

What do I do when my CD has matured?

Once your CD matures, we will alert you. You have 10 days from the date of maturity to transfer the money or take the money out of the CD without penalty. If no action is taken, the money is rolled into a new term, the same as what you had.

What happens if I withdraw money from my CD before it matures?

If you withdraw money from a CD before the term is up, you may have to pay a penalty or forfeit a portion of the interest you earned.

Where can I view information on my CD?

You can view information about your CD within online or mobile banking. Information about CDs is also included on quarterly statements.

Courtesy Pay

How do I avoid any Courtesy Pay fees?

To avoid Courtesy Pay fees, make sure to monitor your account activity. We offer several free services for you to do this, including online and mobile banking. When you receive your monthly account statement from us, be sure reconcile it and update your balance by subtracting any service charges and adding any dividends shown.

How do I sign up for Courtesy Pay?

Courtesy Pay is non-contractual and requires no applications or signatures to activate coverage for checks you write. If you have a checking account with Arsenal, you are automatically enrolled but can choose to opt out at any time by contacting us. If you would like this coverage extended for other types of transactions (debit card, ATM, automated payments you’ve set up, etc.), you will need to let us know you want to “opt in.”

How long do I have to bring my checking account balance back to positive?

Once a Courtesy Pay transaction has cleared, you have 30 days to bring your account back up to a positive balance, either through a direct deposit, transfer of funds or a deposit at one of our branches.

How much does Courtesy Pay cost?

Courtesy Pay is free to set up. If you never overdraw your checking account, you will never be charged anything. Should you overdraw on your account, you will be charged a $28 fee for each item we pay against an overdrawn account.

If I deposit money into my checking account, is it available immediately?

Holds are placed on cash and check deposits at ATMs, and there may be holds placed on check deposits at branches.

If I have enough money in my savings account to cover an overdraft, will you transfer money from there first before activating Courtesy Pay? If so, is there a charge for doing that?

Yes, we will automatically transfer money from your savings to your checking account, and the cost is just $5. If you do not have sufficient funds in your savings account, an overdraft line of credit would be utilized next. If you do not have an overdraft line of credit set up with us, Courtesy Pay is used as your last line of defense.

Is this a line of credit?

Courtesy Pay is not a line of credit or an invitation to overdraw your checking account. It is intended for use as an added layer of security if you accidentally overdraw your account. Courtesy Pay is free to set up. If you never overdraw your checking account, you will never be charged anything. Should you overdraw on your account, you will be charged a $28 Courtesy Pay fee for each item we pay against an overdrawn account. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined, in which case you will still be charged $28 for non-sufficient funds. Overdrafts are paid at our discretion; we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.

What happens if I don’t opt in for the extended coverage available through Courtesy Pay?

If and when you try use your debit card at the point-of-sale or an ATM and don’t have enough money in your checking account to cover the amount, the transaction will be declined and no fee will be assessed. That could leave you standing in line with a cart full of groceries or merchandise and no way to pay for it unless you have another form of payment with you. Equally frustrating and embarrassing would be having your transaction declined at a restaurant, especially if dining out with friends, co-workers or family members.

When I write a check or use my debit card to make a purchase, when does it clear?

It can clear at any time. Payments you make can be processed very quickly, so don’t make a payment from your checking account unless you already have the money in it (past any hold time) to cover it.

Home Equity Line of Credit

Can I apply for a home equity line of credit online?

Currently, you must visit a branch to complete a home equity loan application. You can also get the process started by calling us at 314.962.6363 or 618.239.6363, option 4.

What does “equity” mean?

The “equity” you have in your home is the difference between what you still owe on it (your mortgage balance) and what your house is worth on the market now (the appraised value).

What falls under “closing costs” that the credit union pays for instead of me?

They include title search, title company representative fee, document preparation and an appraisal to evaluate the market value of your property. Typically, closing costs total 2 to 5 percent of a home equity loan.

Are home equity loans limited to certain areas that Arsenal serves?

Yes. In Missouri, home equity loans and lines of credit are available on properties located in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Jefferson County, Franklin County, Washington County, St. Francois County and Ste. Genevieve County, as well as St. Charles County. In Illinois, home equity loans and lines of credit are available on properties located in St. Clair County, Madison County, Monroe County and Randolph County.

What are some energy-efficient home improvements I can make?

Making your home more energy efficient is a great way to save money and help the environment. Many different improvements can be made, and each one has its benefits. We will discuss some of the most popular energy-efficient enhancements and how they can help you save money on your energy bills.

A New, Quality HVAC System

This is an excellent way to save money and improve the comfort level in your home. A new, more efficient heating and cooling system will also lower the overall carbon footprint of your home as it dramatically reduces the amount of energy that you use.

Skylights or Windows With Special Coatings

This helps reduce your energy costs. Installing windows with special coatings can reduce the amount of heat your home absorbs during the summer, which means you will need less energy to cool it down. Skylights are installed in areas where natural light is not present, allowing more light to enter your home without using any electricity.

Additional Insulation in Your Home

This helps reduce the amount of energy needed to heat and cool your home. When your home is well insulated, whether with attic insulation or sealing improvements elsewhere, it will be much easier for you to maintain the proper temperature in every room without overworking your HVAC equipment.

New Water-Saving Fixtures & Appliances

Another great way to make your home more energy efficient is installing new water-saving fixtures and appliances. When you update your plumbing equipment, you will notice a significant decrease in the amount of energy that it takes to keep your water hot throughout the day. In addition to updating your plumbing system, using more efficient dishwashing machines and laundry washers can help lower your monthly water bill as well.

Taking Your Home Off the Electrical Grid

This is a great way to save money on your monthly energy bills. When you take your home off the electrical system, you rely far less on electricity for heating and cooling. You can achieve this by installing solar panels that allow you to produce your power during the day.

Upgrading your home to be more energy efficient is a great way to save money on your monthly energy bills. It also helps the environment by reducing the amount of pollution produced. Many different improvements can be made, but new HVAC equipment, windows, insulation, water-saving fixtures, and appliances are some of the more popular options.

IRAs

Is there a penalty for withdrawing funds early?

Penalties may apply if you withdraw before age 591/2.

What are the requirements for establishing an IRA?

A Traditional IRA can be established/funded by any individual who has taxable compensation or self employment income for the year and will not reach age 70½ by the end of the year.

Note: These restrictions apply only to regular IRA contributions made for the year. There are no age limitations or income requirements for establishing a Traditional IRA for the purpose of receiving assets transferred from another Traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA, or for the purpose of a rollover from a qualified plan, 403(b), or governmental 457(b) plan.

What is the maximum contribution I can make to my IRA?

The 2022 combined annual contribution limit for Roth and traditional IRAs is $6,000. The limit is $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older.

Is there a minimum contribution to open an IRA savings account or an IRA CD?

There is none for an IRA savings account, but $500 for an IRA CD.

How can I determine whether a traditional or a Roth IRA is right for me?

Use this calculator. Please note that this calculator should not be used for Roth 401(k) comparisons.

ITM

Will the same teller handle my transactions each time?

To make sure you’re waited on quickly, the next available Member Solutions Center representative will handle your ITM transaction.

Will I be able to choose how I get cash back?

Yes. You will be able to choose how you get your cash back with several of the most popular denominations to choose from.

What do I need to use the ITM?

If using the ITM, you’ll need to insert your driver’s license into the scanner located on the top-left of the machine. If we have your current ID on file, we can start the transaction with no need to scan.

If using the ITM for an ATM transaction, you’ll need your debit card.

Will my conversations be private?

Yes. Your conversations are even more private than in the lobby of a branch. Here are some of the ways we’re making sure your transactions stay private:

  • When you use the ITM, you will be in a closed-door room.
  • You’ll be able to adjust the volume on the speakers, plug in personal headphones or speak through a handset.
  • An on-screen keypad will allow you to type messages to your teller.
  • You can also scan a written message on a piece of paper for the teller to read.

Please note that all video sessions (ITM transactions) will be recorded for security purposes.

What transactions can I do with an ITM?

You can perform most teller transactions using the ITM, including but not limited to:

  • Withdrawing and depositing cash.
  • Paying loans.
  • Making transfers between accounts.
  • Depositing cash and checks.
Is the ITM replacing existing Arsenal Credit Union employees?

No. All employees from our physical branch at the NGA campus have been relocated to other positions at the credit union. In fact, to help staff the ITM and provide personalized service for our other digital services, we have increased our number of Member Solutions Center employees.

Where are the ITM tellers located?

ITM tellers are located locally at our headquarters in Arnold, Missouri.

Is there a fee to use the ITM?

No. The ITM is free to use. As part of the CO-OP ATM network, it’s also free for members of other credit unions that participate in the network.

How do ITMs work?

To use the ITM, touch the screen and follow the prompts. If you need assistance, a live teller from our Member Solutions Center will help guide you through your transaction. If you need to make an ATM transaction, just insert your debit card, enter your PIN and proceed with your transaction.

What is an ITM?

An ITM is an ATM that comes to life! The machine allows you to start a video chat with Arsenal tellers through an interactive video screen. The ITM also serves as a fully functional ATM for simple withdrawals and deposits.

You’ll need to be connected to the internet to use the app. We recommend always using a secure Wi-Fi connection or your mobile data plan. Using a public Wi-Fi connection puts your information at risk of theft.

Mobile Check Deposit

Can I give others access to mobile banking so they can deposit checks on my behalf?

No. Some fraudulent loan companies will claim that they need your username/password to access Mobile Check Deposit to place funds in your account using a bogus check. When Arsenal receives these “checks,” we reject the deposits because they look suspicious. We also have to close your compromised account and have you come in to open a new one for safety reasons.

How much can I deposit with mobile check deposit?

The amount a user can deposit is based on tiers. Members enter a new tier based on successful transactions. Tier one starts at a $1,500 single-day deposit, while tier three starts at $10,000. Ask us for more information.

Do I endorse checks normally?

You will endorse your checks with a signature. In addition, on the back of your check, you will have to write FOR E-DEPOSIT ONLY AT ACU.

What requirements does mobile check deposit have?

You must have an open and active savings account, mobile banking and be a member in good standing. Your account must also have a positive balance for the past 90 days.

Can business members use mobile check deposit?

Mobile check deposit is free for both consumer and business accounts.

How long does it take for funds to become available when I use mobile check deposit?

It takes roughly one to two business hours at max. Funds may be held on certain deposits. If you make a deposit at night or on the weekend, the funds will usually appear in your account the morning of the next business day (usually before 9:00 a.m.).

What are some of the benefits of mobile check deposit?

Convenience

Being able to deposit a check using your mobile phone is incredibly convenient. You can deposit checks anywhere and at any time, so long as you have access to your phone and an internet connection. This increases the flexibility of where and when you get work done, all while reducing the need for additional trips to the bank.

Avoid Waiting in Line

In addition to being more flexible, depositing a check using your mobile phone is much faster than going to the bank. It can be as simple as snapping a photo of your review and uploading it via the app. This process doesn’t require you to wait long periods or go through extensive security protocols to access your bank account. This makes it much more suitable for busy individuals who don’t have much free time to wait around at the bank.

Security

Security will always be a central concern when it comes to mobile banking, and Arsenal Credit Union has you covered! We use industry-standard encryption protocols to protect your account information and prevent unauthorized users from accessing it.

The ability to deposit checks using your mobile phone is a significant convenience and can save you time and money in the long run. Make the most of your free time and manage your money conveniently with Arsenal Credit Union—get the app today!

Mortgage Loans

How do I know how much I can afford?

Generally speaking, you can purchase a home with a value of two times your annual household income. However, the amount that you can borrow will also depend on your employment history, credit history, current savings, current debts and the amount of down payment you plan to make.

How do I know which type of mortgage is best for me?

There is no simple formula to determine the type of mortgage that is best for you. This choice depends on a number of factors, including your current financial profile and how long you plan on keeping your house. We will help you evaluate your profile, give you choices and help you make the most appropriate decision.

How much cash will I need to purchase a home?

The amount of cash that is necessary depends on a number of items. Generally speaking, though, you will need to supply:

  • Earnest Money: The deposit made when you make an offer on the house
  • Down Payment: A percentage of the cost of the home that is due at closing
  • Closing Costs: Costs associated with purchasing or refinancing a house
What are points?

This is an upfront cash payment required by the lender as part of the charge for the loan, expressed as a percent of the loan amount; e.g., “2 points” means a charge equal to 2 percent of the loan balance.

What does my mortgage payment include?

For most homeowners, the monthly mortgage payment includes three separate parts:

  1. Principal: Repayment on the amount borrowed
  2. Interest: Payment to the lender for the amount borrowed
  3. Taxes & Insurance: Monthly payments made into an escrow account for hazard insurance, property taxes and sometimes Home Owner Association dues
What is a good faith estimate?

It is the list of settlement charges that the lender is obliged to provide the borrower within three business days of receiving a complete loan application.

What is a rate lock?

A rate lock is a contractual agreement between the lender and buyer. There are four components to a rate lock: loan program, interest rate, points and the length of the lock.

What is the difference between a fixed-rate loan and an adjustable-rate loan?

With a fixed-rate mortgage, the interest rate stays the same during the life of the loan. With an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), the interest changes periodically, typically in relation to an index. While the monthly payments you make with a fixed-rate mortgage are relatively stable, payments on an ARM loan will likely change. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of mortgage.

What is the difference between preapproval and prequalification?

The preapproval process is much more complete than prequalification. For prequalification, the loan officer asks you a few questions and provides you with a prequalification status. Preapproval includes all the steps of a full approval, except for the appraisal and title search. It is verification of income and assets.

It’s the same content as what you would see in a paper statement, such as account balances, transaction activity, electronic funds transfer information, year-to-date interest and error notification procedures.

How do I sign up for eStatements?

If you are already signed up for and using our online banking service, all you need to do is click on the eStatements tab within online banking and accept the eStatement disclosure that will appear.

How do I change my password?

After you use your assigned password to log in for the first time, you will be required to change your password. You also can go to My Profile at any time and change your password.

How safe is online banking to use?

This is a long answer (sorry!), but it should address any and all concerns you have.

The online banking products we offer allow you to manage your accounts more securely than receiving statements and sending checks through the mail. A recent study revealed that 90% of unauthorized access to sensitive information is through traditional nonelectronic channels, such as a lost or stolen wallet or theft from a nonsecure mailbox. In addition, consumers who access accounts online can monitor their account activity anytime – not just when the statement arrives – to detect fraud more quickly and take steps to minimize the damage.

To verify that only authorized users log in to our home banking system, we use password verification. When you submit your password, it is compared with the one we have stored in our secure data center. For added security, if a password is entered incorrectly three times, we automatically lock the Internet banking account. We monitor and record bad log-in attempts to detect any suspicious activity (i.e. someone trying to guess your password).

We also require additional security on your account. If you are a new home banking user, you will be prompted to request a verification code to be delivered instantly by phone (text or voice) or by email. Enter the verification code to gain access to your account. You can add extra security to one or more computers that you regularly use to access your home banking account. If you (or someone else) logs in from a non-enrolled computer, you will be prompted to request and enter a verification code. The rest of your online banking visit and any future visits from that computer will remain exactly the same.

This superior security technology – called multifactor authentication – identifies you as the true owner of your account by recognizing not only your password but your computer as well. If your computer isn’t recognized by us – because you’ve logged in from a public computer or one you haven’t used before – we’ll ask you to provide information that only you will know as an additional line of defense to prevent unauthorized access.

When you log in to your online accounts, you’re in a secure area, and all actions you take are encrypted. Basically, the information exchanged between your browser and our online banking server is scrambled so no one else can intercept it. Encryption involves exchanging numbers between the end user’s browser and the Internet banking server. The numbers act as keys to “unlock” the connection between browser and server, much like numbers on a combination lock. The higher the number of combinations, the less likely it is that an outside party could decipher the key and access sensitive information. We employ 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. To find out if your browser supports 128-bit encryption, click on “Help” in the toolbar of your Internet browser, then “About [browser name].”

We also “time out” an Internet banking session after a specified period of inactivity. This keeps others from viewing or continuing Internet banking activity if you leave your computer unattended.

We have structured our network architecture so that the servers which store your actual account information are NOT connected to the Internet. The requests you make through the Internet are handled by our Internet banking servers. Firewall servers act as a traffic cop between segments of our online banking network used to store information and the public Internet.

A ChexSystems report examines data submitted by financial institutions in the past five years. Financial institutions may refuse to open a new deposit account for a consumer who has a negative item reported.

Value Checking

What is the difference between a minimum average daily balance and a minimum daily balance?

We’re glad you asked. Many banks charge fees based on a minimum daily balance. If your account drops below the minimum on any given day, you’ll be charged.

We go with a more generous option and charge fees based on a minimum average daily balance instead. That means we’ll calculate your average balance at the end of each month, and only charge a fee if your account is consistently lower than the required amount. This can be a big help if you find that your checking account dips a little low at the end of the month, but generally stays at a higher balance.

Can I give another user access to my account?

Visa Debit Cards

How do I make a signature-based transaction at the point of sale (POS)?

In most cases you press the green (Enter) button on the terminal after swiping or inserting your Arsenal debit card. If you’re not sure which button to press, ask the cashier which color to press for “credit.” You then simply use your signature to complete the transaction.

For small-amount purchases, you may not even have to sign anything. The funds are then deducted from your checking account, typically within a day of the processing date.

What if my debit card is lost or stolen?

If you have a debit card with us already, but it has been lost or stolen, call us at 314.962.6363 or 618.239.6363 during normal business hours or 888.918.7744 outside of business hours.

When using my debit card as a “credit” transaction, how is that possible? It’s a debit card, not a credit card?

We understand how this can be confusing. It has to do with how the processing networks are set up.

PIN-based debit transactions are routed through what are known as electronic funds transfer (EFT) networks. The EFT network authorizes the transaction and immediately deducts the transaction amount from your checking account. Within a few days, the merchant receives the money.

Signature-based debit transactions are authorized, cleared and settled through the Visa or MasterCard network, the same one used for processing credit card transactions. The merchant submits the transaction with the rest of their card transactions, usually at the end of the day, and then receives the money, typically within a day or two of the settlement. Signature debit transactions are referred to as “offline” transactions, because a PIN debit network does not play a role in processing.

Which type of transaction should I do when using my debit card at the point of sale – PIN (debit) or signature (credit)? Does it matter?

Think of your debit card as a check card, because the money still comes out of your checking account whether you do a credit or a debit transaction with it at the point of sale (POS). The transaction is just processed through a different network. When you swipe or insert your debit card at the checkout, the terminal will often prompt you to enter a four-digit PIN. We encourage you to bypass this option and use your signature instead. When you sign for purchases using your debit card, you earn rewards points! When you enter a PIN, no rewards points are earned.

Who do I contact about my rewards points?

If you have any questions about your points balance or using your rewards card, please contact CURewards member services at 800.637.7728. You can also contact our member services department at 314.962.6363 or 618.239.6363, option 6, then option 2.

What is Zelle?

Zelle is a fast, safe and easy way to send money directly between almost any bank accounts in the U.S., typically within minutes1. With just an email address or U.S. mobile phone number, you can send money to people you trust, regardless of where they bank2.

Will the person I send money to be notified?

Yes! They will receive a notification via email or text message.

How does Zelle work?

When you enroll with Zelle through your banking app, your name, your financial institution’s name, and the email address or U.S. mobile number you enrolled is shared with Zelle (no sensitive account details are shared – those stay with your bank or credit union). When someone sends money to your enrolled email address or U.S. mobile phone number, Zelle looks up the email address or mobile number in its “directory” and notifies your financial institution of the incoming payment. Your bank or credit union then directs the payment into your bank account, all while keeping your sensitive account details private.

Can I cancel a payment?

You can only cancel a payment if the person you sent money to hasn’t yet enrolled with Zelle. To check whether the payment is still pending because the recipient hasn’t yet enrolled, you can go to your activity page, choose the payment you want to cancel, and then select “Cancel This Payment.” If you do not see this option available, please contact our customer support team at 314.962.6363 for assistance with canceling the pending payment.

If the person you sent money to has already enrolled with Zelle, the money is sent directly to their bank account and cannot be canceled. This is why it’s important to only send money to people you trust, and always ensure you’ve used the correct email address or U.S. mobile number when sending money.

If you sent money to the wrong person, we recommend contacting the recipient and requesting the money back. If you aren’t able to get your money back, call our customer support team at 314.962.6363 team so we can help you.
